I don't usually do Thankful Thursdays, but as I picked up a very expensive vial of fluid for my daughter this afternoon, I'm reminded once again how thankful and fortunate I am to have a good job that comes with good medical insurance.

I picked up the third of a series of seven injections that Edgar will receive over the course of the fall and winter and into spring. Each month, I make a trek to the university pharmacy to pick up a vial of monoclonal antibodies that I then take to her doctor's office to be injected into her leg. This fluid will keep her safe from a virus that causes a mild cold in adults and children, but can be deadly in premature infants, and even in term infants who don't have strong immune systems. Each one would cost us over three thousand dollars if our insurance didn't pay for it. She's already been hospitalized once with RSV, which she acquired before the normal RSV season in our area, and hance before her first shot. Twenty three thousand dollars worth of shots, which is about what her hospital stay for RSV cost my insurance. Two weeks later and she'd have had the shot and likely would have only had a mild cough and stuffy nose, and not the full-blown wheezing, struggling to breathe, lungs filling up with mucous, suctioning, nebulizing nightmare she had to endure. My poor sweet baby has been through so much in her short life, and she comes through it all with a smile and eyes filled with joy and love. And for that, and for the medical knowledge, accessibility and insurance I sometimes take for granted, I am truly thankful every day of my life.

Racist much?

Katy, TX is all in a tizzy because a Muslim group wants to build a mosque, along with an Islamic school, a community center, housing for seniors, after school programs, a fitness center.

One guy is going to hold pig races along the proprty line on Muslim holy days.

Some choice quotes:

Cynthia Blackman wrote Radack that the center was a security risk: “Would you and your family safely and comfortably live next to this 11-acre Muslim mosque and facilities?”

Besides keeping track of the running total of post-Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Web site provides home addresses of some association members and advises people who see anything suspicious to contact the FBI. Many people have sent anti-Islamic e-mails to the site.
