Racist much?

Katy, TX is all in a tizzy because a Muslim group wants to build a mosque, along with an Islamic school, a community center, housing for seniors, after school programs, a fitness center.

One guy is going to hold pig races along the proprty line on Muslim holy days.

Some choice quotes:

Cynthia Blackman wrote Radack that the center was a security risk: “Would you and your family safely and comfortably live next to this 11-acre Muslim mosque and facilities?”

Besides keeping track of the running total of post-Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Web site provides home addresses of some association members and advises people who see anything suspicious to contact the FBI. Many people have sent anti-Islamic e-mails to the site.

Though he now concedes the Muslims are probably not after his land, Baker said he is obligated to go through with the pig races, probably within the next few weeks, because “I would be like a total idiot if I didn’t. I’d be the laughingstock now because I’ve gone too far.”

Dude? I think you've got "idiot" sewn up either way. Why waste the energy?

Oh, it's not racist if you don't like Muslims. It's not like they're a race or anything. That's just a perfectly justified fear and a natural worry about terrorists.

Otherwise, I agree with Wickedrad here - when you find yourself in the position of doing something really fucking dumb to keep from looking like "a total idiot," it may be time to cut your losses.

(sheesh. LJ ate the /sarcasm tag I put on there. I can never remember how to do that so it won't think it's a *real* tag.)

In their defense, it's TX. They've had more than their fair share of religious wackjobs. Waco anyone?

Then again, I bet no one objects to the YWAM base in Tyler.

wtf *is* the running total of post-9/11 terrorist attacks? Do they mean on American soil, or are they talking, like, in Iraq? Or anywhere in the world? I am so confused.

Well, bearing in mind that these people are crazy.... :) When I see that claim cited, it's nearly always "there have been no terrorist attacks on American soil since 9/11." (Which, big deal, there was a longer-than-5-years stretch without attacks under Clinton, too, and he didn't turn the country upside down to "accomplish" it. That sort of thing is pretty rare no matter what Dance of Security we are or aren't doing.)

Worldwide, terrorist attacks have been up considerably since 9/11. About 30%, I think. So that's almost never what's intended by someone who's arguing that Bush's policies have been effective; they tend to disregard the rest of the world anyway, as he does.

I know. I refuse to give them traffic, so I'm not looking at the site, so I can't give more details.

Dear fucking God. One of the highlights of Katy, Texas is the Forbidden Gardens. You'd think that the damned place would be overjoyed to have more than the fucking Katy Mills mall there.
