erbie: (pie!)
Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] samaphore! Have some pie!
erbie: (pie!)
I have a confession.

I don't like pie. I love the idea of pie. It sounds like the best thing ever. But in practice, I never like it when I eat it. I used to LOVE pumpkin pie. Now I can't eat it because of my reflux. I still like pecan pie, but I can't seem to find one that's as good as my idea of it. I used to work in a pie restaurant and I would eat a piece almost every shift. The whole concept of pie, a crust filled by something luscious and yummy, is very appealing and makes me want it. But then I have a bite and it's just blah. Cream pies don't work because I'm trying to stay away from dairy as much as possible. Double crust fruit pies don't work because they're too sweet and goopy. Fresh fruit pies can work sometimes, if they don't have too much of that slimy binding gel stuff.

I still love the idea of pie and I always forget that I don't actually like to eat the stuff. It's like a promise that goes unfulfilled.

Blasphemy, I know!

Coffee is the same way. I do like coffee, and I do drink it maybe once every two weeks, but I prefer the smell of the beans to the drinking of the brew. The smell of coffee beans being ground is a rapturous experience. I was at the market last night and someone was grinding beans and I just stood there and inhaled for about five minutes, while trying to look like I was inspecting the frozen goods right around the corner. But coffee is like pie. The smell makes a promise that the drinking doesn't keep. There are some places that brew up a wonderful cup of coffee. I really like lattes, or at least I used to, when I was consuming dairy regularly. Now, it just tastes cloying and makes me wonder why I'm setting myself up for a stuffy nose for a week. There's one place in town that uses a soymilk that is nice, but even then, it's not the same.

My last post got me thinking about how my tastes have changed as I've aged. I used to LOVE Kraft Mac n Cheese. Now, it would make me gag. I used to love lattes, but now I can't stand the milk in them. I used to drink milk every day. I can't remember the last time I had any straight milk without it being an ingredient in something else. Even then, I usually use soy or rice milk now. After stopping dairy for Bob's allergy and Edgar's potential to have an allergy, I find that I've completely lost my taste for all of it except cheese.

When I was a child, I loved candy. I ate milk chocolate and caramel and all those brightly colored things like Laffy Taffy, Skittles, Starburst, Red Vines. Now, the only candy I will eat is dark dark chocolate or homemade toffee or the like. Milk chocolate is not even worth eating.

I used to love Dr. Pepper. I would drink Coke, but not Pepsi. My favorite, though, was Cactus Cooler (it's liquid baby aspirin!) Now, the only things I drink are water, tea IZZE peach fizzy juice and the occasional coffee.

I'm sure there are other things that I used to like that I don't now or vice versa, but I have to do SOME work today!

How have your tastes changed over the years?
