Wielding a pick-axe uses the following muscles:

trapezius
latissimus dorsi
abdominals
abdominal obliques
forearm flexors
triceps
biceps
deltoids
pectorals
quadriceps
gastrocnemius
hamstrings

Mostly triceps and latisssimus dorsi.

I know this because I can feel every single fiber of every single one of them.

And my garden is becoming a reality. My cousin and I are growing a garden outside her cottage on a strip of dirt that gets a lot of sun and is the perfect size for a small garden. We planned what we're going to grow, broke up the packed dirt, weeded and carted it away. Next week we'll break it up again, add a truckload of topsoil and compost and, if we're still alive, maybe put some plants in the ground. This week we're sprouting what were going to do from seed.

We're going to grow:
carrots
brussels sprouts
leeks
onions
tomatoes
broccoli
cucumbers
ETA: Ooh, I forgot celery!

These are all fall and winter plants where we are. In the winter, we will dig it all up and plant our Spring/Summer garden, which will have tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash, carrots, green beans, grapes and whatever else we decide on between now and then. We're putting in a trellis for the climbing vines, and we'll do some herbs in pots or window boxes.

I can't wait to taste my first carrot pulled out of my garden!
